OPAL (Obesity Prevention and Lifestyle) is an SA Health program that supports children, through their families and communities, to be healthy now, and stay healthy for life. Established in South Australia in 2009, OPAL is coordinated through local government and works with communities to create opportunities to eat well and be active.
Ensuring that there is active community and stakeholder involvement in all aspects of OPAL is an essential element of the initiative.
During 2009-2010, Becky Hirst Consulting was actively involved with the OPAL programs at the City of Salisbury, City of Playford, City of Onkaparinga, City of Port Adelaide Enfield and Port Augusta City Council in planning, facilitating and reporting on a series of interactive stakeholder forums. The format of each forum was designed to be in line with OPAL principles of being fun and positive, non-stigmatizing, evidence based and innovative, equity focussed, valuing the local community and asset focussed.
In March 2018, the newly elected Liberal government in South Australia launched a significant program
Facilitating discussion as part of an environmental planning process for a local Council.
